The Weekend Politics Thread Threads Politics On Weekends

This week’s header is pretty short, due to author malfeasance. But hey, that means you can get to the comments quicker, right?

Let’s see what happening out there:

Corruption scandal in Canada

Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould intends to prosecute a huge Canadian engineering firm called SNC-Lavalin for worldwide misbehavior. Well, “former Attorney General,” and “intended.” She was forced out of her position by Prime Minister Trudeau and others in his government, and pretty openly for reasons of expediency (Trudeau: “The context is a tough one, with potential job losses in the thousands”). And did I mention it’s an election year? Fun.

Manafort sentenced

Paul Manafort is really good at, or at least really enthusiastic about, breaking the law. His 47 month sentence is much less than expected, given the penalties doled out to less rich and less white defendants by judges around the US. Anyway, Manafort will be sentenced for still MORE crimes by a different judge next week, so maybe the second time’s the charm.

All the Democrats are running for President

We’ve got serious contenders like Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren (among others) mixing it up with folks who just might be angling for a cabinet position, like Pete Buttigieg and John Hickenlooper. Plus there’s Joe Biden, still playing coy, and Beto O’Rourke, playing even coyer. And we’ve still got to read about the unserious contenders that always go along with the nomination process, like Tulsi Gabbard and Starbucks Guy Who Isn’t A Democrat But He’s Still In The News Too Much So I Put Him In Here.

I’m afraid that’s it for the header this week.

Let’s keep this thread free of threats, be they directed against human or squirrel. You can find some recent updates to the site rules here. Have at it!
