Oh what a day! What a lovely Day Thread (3/3)

March 3 is the birthday of Australian director, producer, and screenwriter George Miller.

Action director or dapper accountant? You decide.

Not too long ago there was some talk about directors who have had their names attached to an unlikely and diverse body of work. George Miller’s name has to be up there.

He’s best known for the Mad Max franchise, a movie series that never duplicated but often imitated… probably because car parts are easy to come by in the junkyard.  It’s a world full of dudes in hockey masks and bondage gear, one armed truck driving women, and Tina Turner not needing another hero.

The Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah

But he also directed Happy Feet… a movie about a dancing penguin. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture. The concept was partially inspired by a grizzled cameraman he’d met on the set of Mad Max 2 whose father was a photographer on Antarctic expeditions.

Happy Feet is right up there with Babe: Pig in the City in the “George Miller directed what?!??” Category of sublime bafflement. Other movies in his repertoire include Lorenzo’s Oil (a Nick Nolte drama about a kid suffering from ALD) and the supernatural comedy The Witches of Eastwick.

A different Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah.

May you post eternal, shiny and chrome.
