Today marks the US release of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, a movie I have been excited about for five years now!
I was absolutely blown away when I saw the original film on opening day way back in 2010. Prior to that, 3-D at my local theater had only been available in a moderately sized cinema, but probably largely thanks to the massive success of a little film called Avatar, they upgraded their largest auditorium into a digital one so it could also play 3-D movies. Dragon was the first movie to be showcased in that theater in the format, and it was absolutely spectacular to say the least. Seeing Hiccup and Toothless soar through the heavens was a delight to all of my senses, and it was a thrill to finally see 3-D on the type of big screen it was intended for.
Since then, all of the theaters at my local cinema have gone digital, meaning they can all play 3-D. The downside to this is that when the sequel came along four years later, it was only available in 3-D in one of the smaller auditoriums. So I saw it instead in “2D” in the larger theater…and, once again, was completely blown away (even though I do wish I could’ve seen it in 3-D on the same screen I saw the original). How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a monumental cinematic achievement, emotionally exhilarating, thrilling, joyous, and yes, heartbreaking (and dark! Not even Toy Story 3 got that dark, so DreamWorks owns you there, Pixar!).
Fingers crossed the third chapter delivers. I’ve already been crying during the trailers, so I’ll probably be bawling my eyes out whenever I (finally) get to see the movie.
Fuck, even this poster makes me cry!
Have a great day, all!
