In the near future, Peter Quill has ascended to the throne as emperor of Spartax. He is the father of two kids, son Jason and daughter, Meredith. He is heading out to space in an attempt to end the Universal Church of Truth once and for all. His wife, L’ssa, wants him to wait until reinforcements arrive. Peter tells his wife he has reached out to the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men and has not heard anything from them.

Peter leads a team onboard the head Universal Church of Truth ship and declares victory over the enemy. Matriarch applauds Peter, but she reveals while they fought so hard to win, the Church’s Dark God destroyed Spartax. As Peter races home, it’s revealed the planet has been destroyed, the Dark God’s symbol carved into the face of the planet.

Years later, Peter lives onboard a satellite orbiting the dead planet. He spends most of his days drinking. He is awakened from hyper sleep because of a new mission he is urgently needed for. His old team, the Guardians of the Galaxy, need his help. After a bitter and heated conversation between Peter and Rocket, Drax restores order and Peter joins them onboard the Milano. Unbeknownst to the Guardians, their movements are tracked by the Shi’ar Empire, who are under the control of the Universal Church of Truth.

The Guardians answer a distress signal onboard the S.W.O.R.D. satellite near Earth. They encounter the Brood but kill all the alien insects. The Brood used the distress signal as a means to draw spacefarers onboard the satellite. Those trying to help ended up as food for the aliens. The Guardians ask why no one from Earth came to check out the satellite, stop the signal from being broadcast, and kill the Brood. The group heads toward Earth and their ship is shot by laser weapons. Rocket is able to crash land the ship. The issue ends with a scavenger telling the group that they have landed in the Wastelands, a monument to Doctor Doom seen in the distance.

After the phenomenal success of Old Man Logan and its prequel series Old Man Hawkeye, Starlord gets the Old Man treatment. For those that aren’t familiar with this line, Wolverine was tricked into killing his fellow X-Men by Mysterio and the villains took over the world. This is the reason why Peter’s call for help goes unanswered. Can the Guardians of the Galaxy stop the Universal Church of Truth? What is the final fate of Groot? Which villains will the Guardians encounter on Earth? These questions will be answered over the course of this twelve-issue miniseries.
