I’m proud of how the latest Avocado Sight & Sound went but I must confess I’m a little disappointed with the dearth of movies directed by women on there. Because of this (and because I like to give out recommendations), here’s some movies directed (or co-directed) by women that I highly recommend: American Psycho, An Angel at My Table, Beau Travail, Big, Le Bonheur, City of God, Cleo from 5 to 7, Cloud Atlas, Clueless, Daisies, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Gleaners and I, Harlan County, USA, The Headless Woman, The Hitch-Hiker, The House Is Black, The Hurt Locker, Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Lost in Translation, The Matrix, Monster, My Brilliant Career, Near Dark, Orlando, The Piano, Ratcatcher, Speed Racer, Toni Erdmann, Vagabond, Wanda, Winter’s Bone, and Zero Dark Thirty.

Other movies directed by women that I adore: The Babadook, Bound, La Cienaga, The Dressmaker, Faces Places, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, The Intruder, Lady Bird, Leave No Trace, Mikey and Nicky, Morvern Callar, Paris Is Burning, Point Break, Revenge, Selma, Seven Beauties, Stories We Tell, The Tale, The Taste of Others, The Virgin Suicides, Wayne’s World, Wendy and Lucy, White Material, Wonder Woman, and You Were Never Really Here.
