Monica Rambeau is a Marvel superhero. She was the first woman to take on the Captain Marvel mantle. Rambeau was created by Roger Stern and John Romita, Jr. Her first comic appearance was in the Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 in 1982.

Monica Rambeau was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was a lieutenant in the New Orleans harbor patrol, and operated as a cargo ship captain. Rambeau was exposed to extra-dimensional energy while trying prevent the creation of a dangerous weapon. As a result of this exposure, she gained the ability to convert her body into energy. She joined the Avengers and lead them on many occasions.
Her abilities include: energy absorption, generation and manipulation, ability to travel at speeds up to the speed of light while in her energy form, convert her body into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum and travel in energy form through the vacuum of space

After she gave up the Captain Marvel codename (to the original Captain Marvel’s son) she began calling herself Photon. She later used the aliases Daystar, Sceptre, Lady of Light, Monica Marvel, Sun Goddess and beginning in 2013, Spectrum.

In September 2013, she began appearing as one of the lead characters in the Marvel NOW! relaunch of Mighty Avengers, acting as the team’s field leader under the new codename Spectrum.

The character reportedly makes her cinematic debut in Captain Marvel played by Akira Akbar.
