Box Office: January 18-20

It’s been interesting watching how things have been unfolding for Dragon Ball Super: Broly as the film had a strong $5 million projected opening night earlier in the week with the various showings it had, but it was the week as a whole and this weekend where the film really shine. The project, which could increase enough to grab a third-place finish when the final results come in, added $8.7 million over the weekend to bring it to a $19.5 million take so far domestically. This continues to show how well the targeted marketing has gone as well as the popularity of this particular franchise on the big screen. It won’t be replicated with all anime properties but there’s cash on the table to be had if done right.

This weekend saw the debut of Glass through Universal and Blumhouse where it did $40.5 million and is anticipated to hit $47 million when you include the Monday holiday numbers. The film supposedly has a $20 million budget, which is believable, so it’s going to be making money pretty well. It’s unlikely to match Split, which opened the same, but you never know how this property will play out as Split ended up with $138 million domestic when all was said and done. Split played on its own and had extra word of mouth when its connection to Unbreakable was revealed. Glass also did $48.5 million overseas and is just proving to be a profitable project.

The Upside held well with a $15.6 million take in its second weekend with a 23% drop over its debut as good word of mouth for a feel-good film makes its way out there.

Aquaman added another $10 million domestically to cross to $304 million, and is now at $759 million overseas for a $1.06 billion total. Once it adds another $21 million, it’ll be the top grossing DC film worldwide as it’ll surprise 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.

It’s also worth noting that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped just 19.8% this week for its $7.2 million take to bring it to just under $160 million. It’s still doing well overseas and it’s at $322 million worldwide and will soon pass domestically Hotel Transylvania 2, the highest grossing film for Sony Animation.

This week sees Fox releasing The Kid Who Would Be King in 3,400 screens while Aviron brings out Serenity in 2,500 screens. Limited releases include In Like FlynnThe Invisibles, JihadistsNever Look Away, and Bricked. Check out trailers for them below.
