Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jan. 15

Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jan. 15 – Here are today’s contestants:

– Evan, a salesman from Michigan, was captain of his school’s Quidditch team;
– Kathleen, a children’s librarian from Kentucky, is a library quizmaster; and
– Anneke, a design consultant from Utah, produces interactive course material. Anneke is a three-day champ with winnings of $64,502.

Kathleen took the lead on both DDs in DJ, lost it back to Anneke both times, then regained it on the last clue of the round to take first place into FJ with $21,100 vs. $20,000 for Anneke and $10,000 for Evan.

DD1 ($600) – TREATIES – An 1828 peace treaty created this new country as a buffer between Brazil & Argentina. (Evan won $1,600 on a true DD.)

DD2 ($2,000) – WOMEN WRITERS – An auction of this poet’s possessions included her copy of “Joy of Cooking” with “Ted likes this” next to a veal recipe (Kathleen won $2,500)

DD3 ($1,600) – “WEST” WORLD – Perth is the capital of this foreign state (Kathleen won $3,000)

FJ – PRESIDENTIAL QUOTES – He said, “Victory over (the) Depression will be…by the resolution of our people to fight their own battles in their own communities”

Anneke and Evan were correct on FJ, with Anneke going big and adding $19,995 to win with $39,995 for a four-day total of $104,497.

Wagering strategy: With Evan having exactly half of her score, Anneke was presented with a decision whether to bet anything at all on FJ. With a $0 wager, Anneke would win if Kathleen missed and Evan bet less than everything or was incorrect.

If Evan was correct and went all-in, Anneke could still win with a miss by Kathleen if she could survive a tiebreaker clue with Evan. By making a big bet, Anneke was forcing herself to be correct on FJ to have a chance, while still needing Kathleen to miss, so the $0 wager gave Anneke more ways to win.

This day in Trebekistan: Not sure why Alex reacted so strangely to Evan’s Quidditch story, given that the show just had an entire category about the sport.

Correct Qs:
DD1 – What is Uruguay?
DD2 – Who was Sylvia Plath?
DD3 – What is Western Australia?
FJ – Who was Hoover?
