Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!
We are kicking off the new year with a wonderful write-up brought to you by Bfth! As always, if you’re interested in writing anything for the thread, let me know! The subject for this week asks you to dream big.
As a musical theater fans, we all know that musicals are magic. Our favorite musicals have that spark of something that speaks to us, grabs us and won’t let go.
For this new year, let me propose a wonderful fantasy and let you supply the why. Imagine that you are the most talented actor/singer/dancer, bar none. You can be in ANY musical you want and play any character…what would that be? It’s not necessarily about your favorite character or show but about who YOU want to be. There are NO limitations.
For me, two come to mind…
First, I would love to play Maria in The Sound of Music. For me it’s a wonderful story of hope and love, all of which comes about as a result of Maria. Sure, she has wonderful songs to sing (and in my fantasy I can sing them all), but she is the nurturer that I strive to be with a moral compass that I try to have. The character of Maria (and I am NOT talking about the real Maria Von Trapp) is flawed, but her flaws are part of her charm. With her charm and wits, she mothers an unruly brood, softens the heart of the man she comes to love and escapes the Nazis with her family. The question is not why would I want to play Maria but why wouldn’t anyone! (At least in my mind.)
Second, is Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. (Remember, NO limitations.) For me he is the most interesting character in the rock opera. He’s got the best numbers. (Who wouldn’t want to rock out to “Jesus Christ, Superstar”? In my mind, I can easily soar across the stage to the adulation of the crowd.) He is more complex than any of the other characters. (I may be a Christian, but in the musical, Christ comes off as kind of weak and wishy washy.) He is THE drama King of the piece…and I want to be just that.
So, go on…cast yourself. Play the heck out of that role. Sing! Dance! Get the standing ovation that you so richly deserve. But before you do, share it with the rest of us, so that we can applaud with the rest of the crowd.
So, who would you play if there were NO limitations? Once again, big thanks to Bfth for writing this up and pushing us all to dream big this year!
