Public Domain Theater: It’s a Wonderful Life (& “Spies”)

Welcome to Public Domain Theater, your home for the wonderful world of films that have (in the United States, at least) fallen into the public domain, and are free for everyone to see!

This Saturday, in honor of the Holiday season, we’re presenting that beloved Christmas classic (and possibly the most politically charged Christmas movie ever made), It’s a Wonderful Life, directed by Frank Capra, and starring James Stewart!

But first, a short cartoon from that same era: “Spies”, one of the Private Snafu shorts produced by Warner Bros. as instructional material American soldiers entering World War II. This one warns about the danger of spies, and was produced in part by Theodore Geisel, better known as children’s book author Dr. Seuss . . . but I’m sure nothing in the cartoon itself gives that away.
