Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!
Two weeks ago our discussion got me thinking about the ways in which different productions of the same show can be radically different. That’s one of the cool things about theatre; it is constantly changing and evolving for new audiences and voices. Revivals can bring new life to an old show and surprise us in all kinds of awesome ways. It’s probably pretty obvious already, but this week I thought we could talk about musical revivals. What are some of your favorite revivals? Are there any shows that you prefer the revival over the original? I’m mainly thinking of Broadway revivals but feel free to extend this discussion to local productions that you’ve seen!
I love revivals because they can introduce me to shows that I hadn’t heard of before, even if they don’t do anything radically different to the show itself. But I also really love it when a revival changes something about the show in an interesting way. For example, Deaf West’s 2015 revival of Spring Awakening used a cast of both deaf and hearing actors to create something truly unique. Using ASL throughout the entire show, the production not only changed people’s understanding of who could be in a musical, but it also created new meaning in the show’s original message regarding miscommunication and the frustration that comes from not being heard. Here’s the performance from the Tony Awards:
So, what are some revivals that you’re fond of? Are there any shows that you prefer the revival over the original?
