Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Dec. 7

Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Dec. 7 – Today’s contestants are:

– Nick, a graduate student from Michigan, a powerlifter whose size doesn’t impress Alex;
– Staci, a CPA from Washington state, tried to take Paul Simon’s picture and got yelled at by Edie Brickell; and
– Dave, a retired police officer from Pennsylvania, works with a foundation to help get jobs for veterans. Dave is a four-day champ with winnings of $100,102.

Nick made a big move from third to first on DD3, but unfortunately took an incorrect guess on the last clue of DJ, costing him the lead going into FJ with $14,600 vs. $16,000 for Staci and $10,600 for Dave.

DD1 – ALL ABOUT AUTHORS – Hunter S. Thompson didn’t coin this word; editor Bill Cardoso did, to describe Hunter’s style of journalism (Nick lost $1,000)

DD2 – WHAT A COUNTR”E”- The last Russian troops left it in 1994 (Staci won $2,000)

DD3 – AFTER THE CIVIL WAR – This Union general who lost the 1864 Presidential race was later Governor of New Jersey (Nick won $6,000)

FJ – OPERA – In Act I of this opera, a messenger says, “barbarous Ethiopians” have invaded & “are already marching on Thebes”

Staci and Nick were correct on FJ, so that mistake at the end of DJ likely cost Nick about $30,000. Staci bet $13,201 to win with $29,201, while Dave gave up the chance at a possible Triple Stumper win by wagering everything.

Wagering strategy: At the time he picked DD3, Nick had $8,200 in third place behind Staci with $13,600. Since he would have been virtually eliminated with a miss with his $6,000 bet, he should have shoved all-in, which would have given him the lead into FJ despite his miss on the last clue of DJ.

This day in Trebekistan: Alex offered back-to-back impressions of Yakov Smirnoff and Tommy Chong. Also, he was probably the laughing stock of the playground for mispronouncing the titles of operas as a kid.

Correct Qs:
DD1 – What is gonzo?
DD2 – What is Estonia?
DD3 – Who was McClellan?
FJ – What is “Aida”?
