A somewhat forgotten (among the general public) movie that I have great affection for is Frank Tashlin’s Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?
The film is the story of Rockwell P. Hunter (played by Tony Randall), a sadsack TV ad writer. He works at the La Salle agency, which is in danger of losing its biggest client Stay-Put Lipstick. Hunter hatches a plan to keep them on; convincing famous actress Rita Marlowe (Jayne Mansfield) to become a spokeswoman for Stay-Put Lipstick. She agrees under the condition that Hunter pretends to be her boyfriend to make her actual boyfriend jealous. This eventually leaks to the media and things get wild from here.
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? is an utterly delightful film. Randall and Mansfield give great performances. Director Frank Tashlin got his big breaking working on Looney Tunes cartoons and Rock Hunter has some great comedic moments that wouldn’t be out of place in one. The films also contains the second to last film appearance from Groucho Marx. (His last appearance was in the apparently horrendous Skidoo).
I highly recommend this film and advise you all to try and track down a copy.
Hope you all have fun posting here today and have a great day.
