October had its biggest three-day record set earlier this month with Venom at $80 million and the new Halloween film came damn close to surpassing it. Perhaps there’s money to be made during October with bigger films after all? Halloween landed with a three-day take of $77.5 million and has the biggest opening day for October with over $33 million, which was about a million over Venom. The film had a simple $10 million budget and lots of advertising and did well with audiences, coming in at a “B+” that’s higher than most horror genre material gets that’s well-rated. It leaned slightly more male than female and it skewed a bit older and all of this should serve it well through the actual Halloween holiday itself.
There wasn’t much in the way of new material beyond that which went wide so it’s mostly a shuffling of films at this point. Venom dropped to third with an $18 million take to bring it to $171 million domestically plus the international side sitting at $290 million for a $461 million worldwide that will continue to surprise fans.
A Star is Born finally got to climb ahead of Venom as it did $19.3 million this weekend to bring it to $126 million domestic overall. It’s still doing a slow and steady overseas release where it’s not expected to do huge but has hit a very respectable $75 million so far.
Next weekend looks like a light weekend with the underpromoted Hunter Killer submarine film from Lionsgate in 2,600 screens and the wide release of Indivisible from Pure Flix. We do get Johnny English Strikes Again making its first push with a 500-theater opening in limited release after opening in most territories around the world beginning in early September where it’s netted $96 million already.
