My tribute to silent horror shorts this month continues with Georges Melies’ 1896 film, The Haunted Castle/The House of the Devil/The Devil’s Castle (it has many names).
It’s a neat little film, considered by many to be the first horror movie. It’s the story of two cavaliers that enter a castle owned by Mephistopheles himself, who bedevils them. The film has some neat editing tricks utilized by Melies to properly show Mephistopheles’ powers.
The film was feared lost for many years before a copy was miraculously found in the New Zealand Film Archive in 1988. Thanks New Zealand!!
Hope you all have fun posting here tonight and have a great night.
