Musicals Thread (Late to the Party)

Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!

Have you ever been told that a musical is really great by numerous people, but for whatever reason you just kind of shrug and move on without giving it a listen? Do those people continue to tell you that you really should listen to it because, seriously, you will like it? And still, for reasons that you can’t explain, you just don’t listen to them? And then, finally, one day you decide that you’re sick of hearing about this musical so you decide to give it a try? And, shock, it’s actually really good and everyone was right? Well, this happens to me a lot. I can’t explain it, but I seem to always be the last person to hear about a musical. Part of it is probably because I’m not exactly tuned into the latest Broadway news. But the other part of it is I can actually be kind of stubborn. Or, at least, I used to be. I’m much better about taking people’s recommendations to heart now because I’ve learned that, hey, sometimes people are right about things!

This leads me to my question this week. Are there any musicals that you were “late to the party” for? In other words, are there any shows that you only started liking long after everyone else? I’m constantly “late to the party”, so there’s plenty of shows I could use an answer to this question. But I’ve decided to highlight 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee because I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately (probably because school started back up). I’ve known about this musical for years, ever since a friend shared “The I Love You Song” with me. I immediately liked the song…but for some reason this wasn’t enough to actually make me sit down and listen to the rest of the show. At the time I guess I thought “meh, I don’t really care about spelling bees…or musicals about kids”. So, I continued to enjoy that one song without bothering to listen to the entire soundtrack.

That changed about two years ago when I was preparing to go on a long car trip with my husband. I was just starting to get him to enjoy musicals, and I wanted to pick a couple of new shows for us to listen to together that I thought he might like. This is when I remembered 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I knew that it had some comedy, which he enjoys, and he had expressed interest in it in the past. We both loved it. The plot was easy to follow, the music was fun and catchy, and it was a sweet story that tugged at my heartstrings. What’s not to love?

Have you listened to 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee? If not, I recommend it! Seriously, give it a listen! Here are a couple songs to get you started:

So, what about you all? Are there any musicals that you were “late to the party” for?
