Crazy Rich Asians became the latest minority-led film to ‘over-perform’ (at this point we should probably instead frame it as the industry under-expecting), earning a strong $25M that contributes to a $34M 5-day open since Wednesday. It’s already made its budget back and will surely go on to have a phenomenal multiplier playing across the desolate cinema landscape of September.
The Meg took up second position, with its second frame earning about what forecasters expected its first one to do, at $21M. A drop of only 53% seems pretty soft for a B-movie nobody seems to have really loved.
Peter Berg’s latest jingoistic Marky Mark movie Mile 22 pulled in $13.6M, against a reported $35M budget, while Alpha (or as I’ve been calling it, Dogs: The Prequel) in its first frame and Mission: Impossible – Fallout in its fourth were neck and neck, with the Cruise pic hanging onto 4th place at $10.7M to the caveman drama’s $10.3M. There were no other wide releases this weekend.
Elsewhere on the charts, Incredibles 2 is now on a milestone slog towards $600M, with only $6M to go. It made $2.3M in this, its 10th weekend. After Disney’s stubborn continuation of the theatrical runs of AWIT and BP earlier this year, it’ll be interesting to see if they embark on a similar quest with the highest grossing animated film of all time.
Next week: Dogs: The Sequel!
