The 100th PGA Championship offered a lot of drama and so many interesting stories, such as the third major in the last six for Brooks Koepka, Tiger Woods returning to contention once more, the birdie faucet being opened and allowing a lot of players to contend, and the implications of the last major for the Ryder Cup. In addition, this event was a microcosm of how golf has changed. The days of one superlative player, be he Palmer or Nicklaus or Tiger, ruling the sport are over, and now there are many, many good young stars who are not afraid of each other or of the living legends. I know that for the most part, golf’s popularity rises and falls with the stars, but it’s a good time to be a fan of the sport even if there is no Next Tiger on the horizon.
Elsewhere…
- The Yankees are playing good ball again, and still slipped a game further back to the Red Sox. Even as the Astros are seeing the surging A’s come ever closer.
- More scandal in the college football world, with a scathing report about the U of Maryland’s program and strong suspicions of negligence (if not outright negligent manslaughter).
- One week of preseason football in the books, and I think almost every team has at least one serious injury concern. Why do they have preseason again?
- Premier League premieres once more
- Carmelo finally signed with the Rockets. That will be interesting to watch.
As ever, all sports topics welcome.
