YOUR BOX OFFICE NUMBERS (From Box Office Mojo):
- The Meg
- Mission: Impossible – Fallout
- Christopher Robin
- Slender Man
- BlacKkKlansman
Turns out the people still love shark movies, as The Meg beat expectations to collect $40M this weekend. With an outsize-for-August budget of $130M it still has a long way to go, but the fact that it’s a Chinese co-production should help it run up the numbers internationally. It won’t have to compete with #3 Christopher Robin ($12.4M) over there, anyway, thanks to Xi Jinping’s thin skin.
M:I-6 continues to ease downwards, following a similar trajectory to Rogue Nation but at a slightly higher altitude. It should easily crest $200M domestic and probably has a shot at dethroning M:I-2 as the franchise’s top earner (unadjusted).
Meanwhile, Slender Man proved that any old horror shit can make money as long as it’s cheap enough, and BlacKkKlansman was good for Spike Lee’s best opening in over a decade.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Hi, it’s Tereglith, taking over on a semi-permanent basis from Captain Video. I don’t know if I’ll have time to do these posts every single week though – anyone interested in going halfsies on the feature?
