Today’s image: on this date in 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella decided to celebrate the Reconquest of Spain from Islam by expelling all of the country’s Jews. Much of Spain’s Jewish population had converted to Catholicism to avoid persecution by the government, which didn’t stop their “enlightened” monarchs from distrusting them as potential traitors and heretics. The decree gave them four months to either convert or leave the country, or else face execution. Once the decree was issued, at least 40,000 non-converted Spanish Jews fled the country, many to North Africa where they formed a large permanent population.
