MLB Talk

• At this point there’s only about 36 hours left until the non-waiver trade deadline. Last week was obviously highlighted by the Manny Machado blockbuster, this week the deals have come fast and furious. A quick rundown of deals (the returns on nearly all of these deals was prospects):

– The Angels traded catcher Martin Maldonado to the Astros

– The Blue Jays traded reliever Sueng Hwan Oh to the Rockies

– The Blue Jays traded starter J.A. Happ to the Yankees

– The Cardinals traded reliever Sam Tuivailala to the Mariners

– The Mets traded 2B/SS Asdrubal Cabrera to the Phillies

– The Orioles traded reliever Zach Britton to the Yankees

– The Orioles traded reliever Brad Brach to the Braves

– The Rangers traded starter Cole Hamels to the Cubs

– The Rays traded starter Nathan Eovaldi to the Red Sox

– The Rays traded reliever Jonny Venters to the Braves

– The Rays traded reliever Matt Andriese to the Diamondbacks

– The Royals traded 3B/DH Mike Moustakas to the Brewers

– The Twins traded reliever Ryan Pressly to the Astros

– The Twins traded IF/OF Eduardo Escobar to the Diamondbacks

– The White Sox traded reliever Joakim Soria to the Brewers

• Lots of rumors about Rays pitcher Chris Archer being available (with Archer himself referring to the rumors as “unsettling”) with multiple teams scouting the two time all-star. Orioles outfielder Adam Jones and Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre are also seeing their names flying around a lot, though both of those players have ’10 and 5′ rights meaning they can’t be traded without their consent. Who else do you think will be moved before Tuesday? Should be moved?

• This weekend was Hall of Fame weekend, culminating in today’s induction of the 2018 class. Vladimir Guerrero, Chipper Jones, Alan Trammel, Jim Thome, Jack Morris and Trevor Hoffman all took their long awaited spots in Cooperstown. Anyone else watch the ceremony today? Have a good memory of any of the above players?

• Braves starter Sean Newcomb pitched a near no-hitter on Sunday that was broken up in the 9th inning by the Dodgers Chris Taylor. But the story after the game was old tweets of his that resurfaced during his start containing both racial and anti-gay slurs. Newcomb spoke about the tweets after the game and apologized and reportedly will meet with MLB inclusion ambassador Billy Bean this week. Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner also had old tweets containing similar sentiments revealed on Sunday and of course there was last week’s Josh Hader saga. I have a suspicion that these won’t be the final players to have old tweets turn up but I suppose that’ll be something we just wait and see.
