Muppet Casting: Reefer Madness (The Musical)

It’s time for another round of Muppet Casting, where we take a famous movie and ask, if Jim Henson’s Muppets made their own version of it (in the vein of The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island), which Muppets would you cast in the lead roles?

This week, it’s Reefer Madness: The Musical!

Kermit the Frog as Jimmy – I considered going with Robin for the added youthful innocence, but I really think you need Kermit to give Jimmy his initial wholesomeness, while having just enough of an edge that he can also sell his descent into reefer crazed depravity.

Miss Piggy as Mary Lane – Partly because she’s the go-to love interest for Kermit, but also because acting sickeningly sweet most of the time, only to change on a dime to cold-hearted ruthlessness (as Mary does during the “Little Mary Sunshine” number) is classic Miss Piggy.

Gonzo the Great as Ralph – Gonzo would do great work with Ralph’s twitchy, manic, not-quite-right-in-the-head energy.

Camilla the Chicken – Replacing Sally’s dialogue with chicken bawks wouldn’t disrupt too many parts of the movie, and during the cannibalism scene, her cut up body could be represented by a bucket of KFC, with everyone still acting completely horrified by the sight for added comedic effect.

Rizzo the Rat as Jack – Rizzo’s the only Muppet I can see pulling off antiquated tough-guy talk like “don’t flip your skirt!” or “guess you’re not the hep cat I took you for”.

Our Very Special Guest, Ms. Kristin Chenoweth! as Mae – We’re running low on female Muppets, so I decided Mae should be our human guest star. And for the part, we need someone who’s not only a good actor and a good singer, but has the range needed to hit the “rape note” in “The Stuff”. Based on the cast recordings of Wicked, I think Chenoweth can probably pull that off.

Janice as Joan of Arc – A small part, but Janice would be great doing the “the many voices in my head tell me we have special guest tonight” bit, as well as introducing . . .

Fozzie Bear as Jesus – Since Jesus appears to Jimmy in the form of a lounge singer, I just thought it would be funny to put Fozzie in the role and have him insert some bad standup into the act as well.

Rowlf the Dog as FDR – Theoretically an important character, but not asked to do that much, and just has to be cool with doing our main characters a solid. Perfect role for Rowlf.

and

Sam the Eagle as The Lecturer – I don’t normally post videos in these Muppet Castings, but since many folks here probably haven’t seen Reefer Madness: The Musical, I figured a little audio/video demonstration is in order. Granted, I could simply say, “The Lecturer is a fear mongering moral Guardian”, and we’d all agree Sam would be great for the part. But I want you to watch the following videos, imagine it’s Sam delivering those lines, and tell me it wouldn’t be the most perfect thing ever:

Those are my picks for a Muppet rendition of Reefer Madness: The Musical. What are yours?
