Food Fads of the Past. Sunday Food Thread 7/22

I don’t know why this popped into my head today but here it is. I was a child of the late ‘60s-‘70s and the space age figured big into all kinds of culture and astronauts loomed large in the zeitgeist. Not just sci-fi adventure exploration/adventure but TV shows like I Dream of Jeannie which centered around an astronaut and his buddies and an improbably blond/blue-eyed Persian genie. There were all kinds of toys and games about astronauts too, I had models of the lunar lander and made a home made splashdown capsule for a 3rd grade science project.
Astronaut food was everywhere too because we all wanted to experience the excitement and risk of traveling through space and what better way than eating weirdly over-processed hunks of indeterminate matter that tasted vaguely of chocolate, banana, and other kid-friendly flavors (because what self-respecting spaceman wanted vegetables anyway?). I still have a pretty good recollection of what those Food Sticks tasted like, I had to have them in my lunchbox at school. Tang was also a staple at our house, it somehow never quite mixed up smooth and had a touch of grit- those astronauts really had to tough it out.

So what do you remember from your youth? Are there crazy foods that you couldn’t get enough of that you won’t touch with a ten for pole now?
