Jeopardy! recap for Thur., Jul. 12 – Please welcome today’s contestants:
– Johanna, a piano technician and woodworker from New York, wants to write New York Times crosswords;
– Michelle, an elementary school music teacher from Ontario, is the family Star Wars guru; and
– Wes, a stand-up comedian and storyteller from Massachusetts, was inspired by Dave Chappelle at a college show. Wes is a three-day champ with winnings of $51,196.
Johanna bet enough on DD3 to take the lead, but not enough to keep it, as Michelle was able to regain first place going into FJ with $15,200 vs. $14,400 for Johanna and $6,400 for Wes.
DD1 – AD COUNCIL CLASSICS – A 1983 campaign introduced the phrase “Friends don’t let friends” do this (MIchelle lost $200)
DD2 – MATH & SCIENCE – The name of this long-vanished supercontinent is from Greek for “all” & “Earth”(Johanna won $3,800 on a true DD.)
DD3 – COLORFUL PLACES – An HBO film & Broadway musical both bear the name of this Long Island estate owned by Jackie Kennedy’s aunt (Johanna won $4,000 – this amount was doubly problematic as not only did it not ensure the lead for Johanna heading into FJ, it would have dropped her to less than half of Michelle’s score with a miss.)
FJ – 1970s BESTSELLERS – The author of this novel thought of calling it “Silence in the Water”
Michelle and Wes were correct on FJ, with Michelle betting the surprising amount of $3,200 to win with $18,400.
That wager left Michelle open to being passed by Wes with a miss, while also making her vulnerable to being passed by Johanna if both were correct. Meanwhile, Johanna neglected to shut Wes out by betting nearly everything, costing herself second money.
That’s before our time: No one knew that the slayer of Marion Crane is Norman Bates, or in the “Ten” category, that the song by General Public used in multiple movies is “Tenderness”.
This day in shilling: I call BS on expecting the players to identify a voice actor doing an accent on a noisy animated clip for a movie that was weeks away from opening at the time of taping.
DD1 – What is “drive drunk”?
DD2 – What is Pangaea?
DD3 – What is “Grey Gardens”?
FJ – What is “Jaws”?
