Welcome to the *CG thread, where we talk all manner of Card Games – Collectible, Trading, Living, and otherwise! Feel free to chat amongst yourselves about the card games you’re playing or anything card game-related that strikes your fancy.
This week, I want to take a step back from interrogating the inner workings of what makes CCGs work and talk about something that everyone who has played a CCG has an intimate relationship to: The Deck.
The Deck is what makes CCGs work. It’s a beautiful enigma that sits at the very center of the experience from the moment that you sit down at the table. Statistically speaking, when you shuffle your deck and put it on the table, it’s almost certain that that specific arrangement of cards has never existed in the history of the universe. Every game is a new and special experience and it all flows back to that singular, unique starting point.
Decks are experiences. Every draw is a new opportunity, a new wrinkle in the game that changes the situation. The deck that you choose lays out the story that the game you’re about to play is going to tell.
Decks are tools. There are a whole array of decks out there; an entire metagame to analyze and exploit to outplay your opponent. The deck that you choose is the first play that sets your chance of winning it all.
Decks are expressions. People call building a deck “brewing” like you’re making a magic potion that’s going to do exactly what you design it to do. The deck that you choose is uniquely yours; it both defines you and is an extension of you.
This week’s prompt: What’s your favorite deck that you’ve played or seen? What decks do you have built right now?
Or, as always, feel free to talk about anything going on with you in the world of *CGs.
