Review – ‘Justice League’ #1

The Source Wall is broken. The multiverse is dying. Earth is under attack by prehistoric cavemen. Who will answer the call to save the day? The new Justice League that’s who!

Spinning out of the events of Justice League: No Justice, Scott Snyder and Jim Cheung bring us a new line up of the league: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, John Stewart, Aquaman, and The Flash.

If you notice, this line-up is exactly like the one on the popular Cartoon Network series Justice League.

After purchasing this yesterday I asked my friend at the local comic shop why DC Comics didn’t introduce this version of the League concurrently with the cartoon. She said she didn’t know but the comic would have sold gangbusters with the synergy.

In this issue, Vandal Savage has unleashed a group of 6 cavemen tribes to attack the Earth in an attempt to make it theirs.  In a coordinated effort, the League is able to take down each squad of cavemen with the help of the new League chairman Martian Manhunter.  However, the League is unable to catch their breath as a ball of energy ejected from the Source Wall is headed to Earth.  Will the League be able to stop this totality from reaching Earth?  What will happen if they don’t? TOTAL DESTRUCTION!

Scott Snyder, after his massively popular Batman run with Greg Capullo, is given the reins to DC’s super team and does not disappoint.  He gives us a wink and a nod to the Justice League’s past, a nice preview of the future of the League, and a formidable foe (Not Vandal Savage) to wreak havoc on the super friends.

If you are looking for a summer blockbuster, don’t expect it at the cineplex.  Get off the couch and head over to the local comic shop and slap down a fiver and pick this book up immediately!

Justice League #2 will be released on Wednesday June 20, 2018.
