Welcome to this week’s History Thread. Sorry about the past two weeks, WordPress issues prevented anything from posting. I’ll declare this an Open Thread where you can discuss anything history related that’s happened over the past few weeks.
Today’s image: on May 29, 1453 Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans had spent the past few centuries gradually grinding down the Byzantine Empire, until that enfeebled state remained a small enclave of territory in Asia Minor and Eastern Europe. After two months of siege, the Ottomans, led by Sultan Mehmed II, managed to overrun the city, subjecting it to a fearful sack and killing Emperor Constantine XI. The Byzantine Empire was finished, aside from a few rump states that lasted into the 1470s, and the Ottoman Empire began their dominance of Eastern Europe and Central Asia which lasted until the First World War.
