MLB Notes
• We had another no hitter! James Paxton of the Mariners last Tuesday struck out 7 and walked 3 while holding the Blue Jays hitless in Toronto. Paxton is himself Canadian making this fairly special for the 29 year old lefty. It also set an MLB mark by being the 3rd different country to have seen a no-hitter thrown within it’s borders (following the US and Mexico). Paxton’s been pitching superbly this season but has only two wins to show for it after eight starts as the Mariner’s have struggled to provide him with offensive support.

• Roberto Osuna is 23 years old but has been making his mark as Blue Jays closer the past several years, already accumulating 100 career saves. Osuna’s future is now murky at best, he was arrested last Tuesday morning and charged with assaulting his girlfriend (he was released later that day on his own recognizance). MLB acted quickly to place him on administrative leave per terms of the CBA and he will certainly remain on leave indefinitely as the investigation unfolds (and even if he is ultimately cleared, he is by no means, safe from further punishment from Major League Baseball). Sheryl Ring, a lawyer and contributor at Fangraphs, wrote an excellent article examining the future of the investigation and the Blue Jays somewhat peculiar PR response here. It is well worth the read (and far better than anything I could write on the subject).

• Rafael Palmeiro is 53 years old and hasn’t appeared in a MLB game since failing a drug test in 2005. He’s remained adamant that he never intentionally took a banned substance and blames a tainted vitamin shot for the test failure. He’s now playing in an independent league for the Cleburne Railroaders alongside his 28 year old son Patrick (his younger son Preston is a prospect in the Baltimore Orioles system). Palmeiro’s stated goal is to make it back to an MLB roster and prove he can still play at a high level. He singled in his first game for Cleburne and it should at least be an interesting story to watch.
