Last week we talked about our favorite leading ladies, so this week I thought we could talk about musical men. I don’t have as much to say about the men of Broadway. There is some amazing talent among the men, don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t get as excited about them as I do when I think about someone like Sutton Foster. So I’m taking this opportunity to highlight someone who I absolutely adore and would love to see perform some day: Jonathan Groff. My love for him started with Spring Awakening. I’ll never forget seeing the cast perform at the Tony Awards; I was immediately hooked, and I was blown away by Jonathan Groff’s intensity. I obsessively watched every performance I could find on YouTube, learned every word to every song, and jumped at the chance to see the show when it toured. Since then I’ve discovered that Jonathan Groff can bring a wide range of characters to life. Although I never saw him perform in Hamilton, his performance on the album always makes me laugh. And I absolutely love his take on Gordon in A New Brain (a musical that doesn’t get nearly enough love as it deserves). Much like Sutton Foster, Jonathan Groff’s greatness isn’t limited to musicals. In fact, one of my absolute favorite things that he has ever done is Looking. If you haven’t seen it, please do yourself a favor and watch the two seasons (and the movie) that HBO gave us before it was stupidly cancelled.
