If you were excited about seeing The New Mutants this April, you’re going to be in for a very long wait. THR is reporting that the movie has been pushed back to February, 2019, a remarkably long delay considering the film’s trailer has already gotten a lot of traction.
There is apparently a reason for this, as 20th Century Fox (now owned by Disney) has announced that Deadpool 2 will now open in May, meaning it would’ve come out only a few weeks after The New Mutants, and maybe they felt that was too many mutants for everybody to handle at once. This especially would’ve been an issue in international markets, where the films could’ve potentially “overlapped” with each other.
But the bigger–and less shocking–release date change came to poor Gambit, which lost Rango helmer Gore Verbinski as its director recently and will now come out on June 7th, 2019, and even that might be a stretch given how many problems the movie has already had before even a single scene has been shot. But it’s worth it if we can give Channing Tatum his own superhero franchise, I suppose.
You can watch the actually quite terrifying trailer for The New Mutants below, even though you won’t be able to see the movie for more than a year now.
