Lots of different groups and websites like to do this, so I figured why not The Avocado? This isn’t a contest and isn’t associated with The Pits awards, so just let us know below what YOUR word of the year is!
Mine is kakistocracy, a word coined by English author Thomas Love Peacock in his 1829 novella The Misfortunes of Elphin. and was formed from the Greek words kákistos, meaning “worst”, and -kratía, meaning “government” or “rule”. Wiktionary defines it as such:
“Government under the control of a nation’s worst or least-qualified citizens.”
Why did I choose this particular word to represent 2017? Well, let’s just leave that unspoken here. (Incidentally, my word for 2016 was normalize.)
