On the field, football clearly dominated the American scene, with that insane Saturday in CFB, a rather messy day in the NFL (punctuated by the season ending injury to Richard Sherman), and the bizarre Jerry Jones Vs The Rest of the Owners. But I wanted to cast my SportsLight on the end of one of the longest running radio partnerships. Mike & Mike in the Morning, on ESPN Radio since 2000, comes to a close this Friday with Mike Greenberg moving to TV and Mike Golic staying in the morning slot with Trey Wingo. Many (most notably Bill Simmons) have been widely critical of the show’s rather mild approach to sports, but I discovered the show in 2003 and have been a loyal listener ever since. Is this groundbreaking radio? No. It is fun, entertaining, and sometimes even intelligent? I think would say yes.
I will miss the duo, and lament what apparently is a ruined friendship. And I have to question the logic of moving Greenie to TV, as if somehow he can fix their morning ratings. But everything eventually goes off the air. I wish Greenie luck on TV, Golic continued success on the radio, and hope that both of them can find the time to talk about hockey more often.
