On this date in 1851 “Moby-Dick” by Herman Melville was first published in the US. “Moby-Dick” is a literary classic that tells of the pursuit of a white whale that defied capture.
Thought by some to be the “one of greatest works of imagination in literary history”, “Moby-Dick” continues to have an impact on readers.
I am sure most know the basic premise: Narrator Ishmael recounts his adventures on the whaling ship, Pequod, under the command of Captain Ahab, as Ahab obsessively pursues the white whale Moby-Dick to the detriment of everyone involved.
“Moby-Dick” was not a commercial success when first published, and was out of print at the time of the author’s death in 1891. It wasn’t until the 20th century that “Moby-Dick” began to receive critical recognition and gained the reputation as a “Great American Novel”.
It’s opening line is one of the most famous in literature, “Call Me Ishmael”
