Dorothy Dandridge Day Thread (11/9)

Today is the birthday of Dorothy Jean Dandridge (1922).  Dorothy Dandridge is one of my favorite actresses of all time.

Dandridge was a legendary actress, singer and dancer. She was the first black woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for 1954’s Carmen Jones. Dandridge was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1959 for her role in Porgy and Bess.

Early in her career Dandridge performed at the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater.

After starring in Carmen Jones, Dandridge went    on to star in Island in the Sun (1957) which also starred Harry Belafonte. Other films include: The Decks Ran Red, Tamango and Moment of Danger.

In the 1960’s Dandridge had personal setbacks and she died tragically at the age of 42 of a suspected embolism or possible drug overdose.

In 1999, HBO did a biographical film based on Dandridge’s life, starring Halle Berry, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. Dandridge also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dandridge deserves to be remembered for her legendary performances and achievements.

Have a wonderful day!
