It’s Week Three of the Musicals Thread! A hearty welcome to all the Avocados (Avocadians?) who love (or just kind of like) musicals! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (more or less) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans.
Over the last two weeks there has been a lot of talk about TV musicals. That is, either musical episodes of non-musical TV shows (consider, for example, the hilarious Community episode “Regional Holiday Music”) or full-blown musical TV shows (my favorite being Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). So, this week I’m curious to know what you all think of this subgenre (?) of musical theatre. Do you like musical TV shows? What about them do you like/dislike? What are some of your favorites?
Generally speaking, I’m a fan. I’m always excited to see a musical episode of a show that I love, but I’ll admit that I tend to be skeptical when I hear about a new musical TV show. I’m not totally sure where this skepticism comes from, but maybe I’ll figure it out in this week’s discussion. As this is not my area of expertise, I’m going to keep my own response to this question short. Although it’s not strictly a musical episode, one of my favorite song-filled episodes of a TV show is Adventure Time’s “What Was Missing”. I picked this in part because I figured it wouldn’t be talked about, but I also just think the music in Adventure Time is pretty wonderful, and this episode has some of the best examples of that.
