The team sat quietly in the darkness. They thought about poor Jack. He had taken his death in stride, just like everything else in life, but they couldn’t shake the guilt of being wrong, twice now.
The sound of the refrigeration unit kicked on and off several times, trying to counter the body heat of 17 or so people. On the third kick-on, a loud metallic scraping was also heard from the center of the car.
The dull hum of the refrigeration unit was cut by a sudden “Ugh. How long is this gonna take?” from Leah Lemma.
“Gh0st didn’t give us an estimate this time,” said Doctor Roombina, “I… I feel like she might be done with us.”
“Who can blame her at this point?” asked Zenon, with a raw voice, “We killed her friend.”
“Well, her mentor and boss is still on this train. Also, me. So she should probably get her head back in the game before we freeze and Sin is tortured to death,” said B through gritted teeth, adding “This dress is not made for cold weather.”
As if in response to this, the lights in the car turned on.
An odd sight presented itself to their light-adjusting eyes. A large vending machine was hanging from a meat hook. H4PP was probably set on the hook to seem like a gruesome sight, but the hook just blended in with all of the other various metallic springs and snacks in his display cabinet. The resulting image, rather than looking like a corpse on a hook, simply looked like a floating vending machine.
A small laugh, which turned unsubtly into a cough escaped Jimmy.
The vending machine displayed “PLEASE SELECT A SNACK” on its keypad.
SM4PT1 connected his comm into the machine’s port. “It looks like they deleted H4PP’s personality. His memories are still here, though. I’ll upload them now.”
“Damn. They didn’t even turn him off” said Subaru, “That’s pretty trox’d.”
“Hey Gh0st, I’m sending you the memories now,” SM4PT1 said into his comm.
“Thanks, SM4PT1,” said another, slightly muffled voice over comms, “Gh0st will crack it and I’ll analyse.”
“Sorry, who’s this?” asked SM4PT1.
“Name’s Selina. Tall, dark, brooding. You might have seen me pacing in the lab with my gas mask,” said Selina Jackson, “I’m taking over most of the comms stuff for Gh0st. Kid’s a bit drained. She brought me up to speed on the situation. Sounds like you guys are in a bind. I’ll help as much as I can, but do your best to kill fewer of our good friends.
“Anyway, Gh0st has these memories cracked now. I’ll do the analysis and get back to you.”
A few minutes pass. The refrigeration unit no longer hummed, but the room temp was still quite cold. A few of the strike team members huddled together for warmth, while others paced up and down.
“Well, the vending machine’s clean. His AI was completely erased, though. No getting that back,” said Selina over comms. “The kid’s working on opening up this car. Do what needs to be done in the meantime.”
Happiest/H4PP is dead. He was a Freedom Fighter [Vanilla Town].
