The Tabletop Games Thread Levels Up (5/20/26)

Welcome back to the weekly Tabletop Games thread! This thread is where we can talk about all kinds of RPGs, card games, board games, etc. Whether you gather around a physical table in the real world, or use a virtual space to play with friends who may live far away from you, this is where you can discuss your favorites, ask for and/or receive recommendations, recap your recent adventures, or even find some people to play games with!

Discussion Prompt: In the ongoing fourth campaign of Critical Role, DM Brennan Lee Mulligan introduced some new mechanics for the process of leveling up. When the players reach a point where they have earned a new character level, he’ll have the players roll their new hit points between sessions and write down what they got. The players will also discuss any potential character choices (like taking a Feat at 4th level), and maybe give one or two options that they’re considering. Later, each individual player can choose any moment during the game session to officially level up, applying the hit points they rolled and gaining access to any new spells or abilities in the moment, even in the middle of combat. This makes the process of leveling feel more narratively significant for each PC, as opposed to being just a mechanical boost that happens “off-screen.”

What do you think of this system, and how do you generally handle the process of leveling up in your own games?
