Do not believe your calendar. It is in fact still Monday and not Tuesday, meaning I am as punctual as ever.
Once again, the sky’s the limit for Project Hail Mary, which is showing one of the stronger holds for a blockbuster in recent memory with an amazing $54 million. Keep in mind, that’s more than it was initially projected to open to. Hail Mary is hailing an outstanding total of $163 million, meaning it has already delivered a KO to Amazon’s previous box office champion Creed III, which totaled at $156 million stateside. Mary is also easily our biggest film of the year so far, even as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks to claim that title in a matter of very short days. But more on that in a bit.
Our lone newcomer, They Will Kill You, failed to make a killing with only $5 million. This in spite of a decent critical reception and a frankly terrific trailer. Who the fuck thought opening this Ready or Not clone a single week after that film’s sequel was a good idea in any capacity? The two movies looked the same even if they are quite different in execution (with They Will Kill You going more for crazy action than black comedic horror). How did they think general audiences would respond? That being said, I’ve heard this one is quite fun. So if you want to check it out, I’d suggest doing it before your local theater removes it from screens so Mario can have at least 40 showtimes a day.
Yes, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie–no shit–is projected to make an absolutely galactic opening when it premieres on Wednesday (Universal is even giving it midnight showings as they never want to hold so-called “preview screenings” on Value Tuesdays for their big releases). Even if it doesn’t match the debut of the 2023 film, it is set to absolutely dominate April until Michael moonwalks into theaters at the end of the month. When The Super Mario Bros. Movie came out, it sucked the oxygen out of all other new releases. Dungeons & Dragons didn’t stand a chance, as it was aiming for the exact same audience. Can we expect Project Hail Mary to falter too? Probably not, as the WOM on that has been so strong that it should still have a very good Friday when school is out for almost all kids and many college students. In any case, both releases have a multi-generational demographic. Galactic double-bill, anyone?
Also, where the fuck did Forbidden Fruits come from?!?
Anyway, the top ten, via Box Office Mojo
