Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! Last year I read Satoshi Yagisawa’s Days at the Morisaki Bookshop and really enjoyed it. Part of the appeal for me was feeling like I was back in Jinbocho surrounded by secondhand books and coffee and curry (what more could a person need?) but I also really enjoyed spending time with the protagonist as she navigates some major changes in her life, finding refuge among books and a new community. There’s also a sequel (which I haven’t read, yet) and a movie (which I have watched, yet). If you’re looking for something cozy to read, I highly recommend this book! And if you’re visiting Tokyo, and you like books, coffee, and/or curry, you should definitely make time to visit Jinbocho.
And, as always…
What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?
Happy Wednesday! 🍙
