My gaming addiction’s worn off a bit, partly due to misplaced complacency. To be sure, lack of creative work turned out to be the only real downside to the now (well) more than 200 hours of Stardew Valley I’ve played since New Year’s. I’ve been spending less money and hardly drinking at all—though the latter was on the cards in any event—and it hasn’t been like I’ve been a total shut-in; I’ve been getting in winter walks and working out at the Y at least once a week, as well as going to Spanish classes at same (and not always the same day). I also got a lot done on my storage unit reduction last week (I’m now something like two or three months ahead of schedule) and I managed to get out to that screenprinting workshop at the library a couple of Saturdays back. And finally, I managed to make a relatively well-attended anti-ICE rally Friday after a half shift at work. So things could be a lot worse (I guess my reading fell behind a touch, but I came close to making it up by the end of the month).
On the other hand, I thought I already had a few works under my belt for the year when I was actually thinking of December. I figured “even that wasn’t a downside on its own terms” but turns out… no. I also flaked out of the screenprint workshop towards the end as there were more people than expected (and I wasn’t used to weekend crowds as I’m usually working) and I wasn’t waiting another half an hour for a spare screen. I feel like I’ve got a pretty good handle on the basic process now, but I figure I’ll wait another year to properly dip my toes therein (not least as it sounds like I need a little more space than I’ve allotted at present). All things considered, I had to get my head back in the game last week. The break was pleasant (and my first real engagement with video games as an artform wasn’t nothin’, either), but there’s still so much I want to do.
The header this week is a detail from one of the charcoals I did last month; something I need to do this week is see how one of those works on regular drawing paper, as I’ve been wondering whether the coal shows up better when the paper’s smoother (also, see below if things go well).
How’s your work going?
