So this is a box office report. Kind of.
Yeah, I’m late, but you know what? Deadline hasn’t even published their official weekend chart yet. More than 400 movie theaters were closed yesterday due to the weather. We’re in somewhat uncharted territory here, and a day later, I still can’t find any actuals. Huh.
Anyway, Avatar finally gets dethroned by Mercy, which “leads” the box office with $11 million. All things considered, this could be a lot worse. Facing a snow storm and largely negative reviews (although ComingSoon’s positive write-up is enough to get me interested), this is almost impressive, even with that $60 million price tag. As I’ve said, Amazon runs by different rules whenever they release a film like this to theaters. It’s essentially a giant commercial for when it arrives on Prime Video. Is that cynical? I dunno. What I’m saying is they’re going to be perfectly fine with these numbers. Take that however you will.
That said, we really have yet to see a 2026 movie break out. Last year, January had Dog Man to give cinemas a much-needed boost. Next weekend, Send Help hopes to break the streak of winter disappointments, but even that is unlikely to open higher than $15 million (hell, it quite possibly might lose to Iron Lung, and if you haven’t heard of that, you’re probably over 30).
And then there’s 28 Years Later: The Dipsy Dance, which is officially a bomb. At least Sony’s studio heads can use the snowstorm as an excuse, which hopefully might be enough to justify moving forward with the planned conclusion to the trilogy. But really, this was never going to show strong legs, even with those great CinemaScore ratings. It’s simply too weird and especially too violent to achieve mainstream success.
Anyway, the top ten, via The Numbers
