While the video games continue (I’m nearing the limits of what’s apparently majorly possible in Stardew Valley, though, so I can feel things starting to subside), I’ve been trying, at least, to branch out into a few other areas. I planned to check out woodworking and crochet classes at the local library, only for me to cut my hand before the first (bad omen, I figured, for a woodworking class and though it wasn’t much, it might have made things more difficult) and get the location wrong for the second. The latter was exacerbated by the intense weather we’ve been having in southeast Michigan the past week; I’d walked two miles through a mild blizzard the previous night after my Spanish class at the Y had been cancelled and wasn’t in the mood to waiting for another bus that might be an hour late.
Given how weird Michigan winters have been the last several years due to climate change, I’m not really complaining about a “classic” version (how many more of these can we expect?) but it’s been encouraging a hibernatory mindset, which turns out to be much easier to fulfil in my new place than in the old. There, a largely illusory FOMO attended my proximity to downtown; we’re just far enough out of it here that it almost feels rural, and given that I don’t want to be here more than a few years (and I suspect circumstances might render that unlikely in any event), I’d like to maximize the location’s advantages while I can. While I hope they turn in a creative direction soon, I’m seeing this break as partially necessary, a way to clear my head given how much I’ve been doing creatively up until now. I’ve always felt this needed to be treated as a vocation if not an actual job, but I don’t think it was until the last month that I realized I needed a vacation therefrom just as much as from an actual job.
That said, I have Saturday off, specifically to go to a screenprint workshop at the library. Already thinking maybe it was for the best that the other two didn’t work out; loading too much on my plate might throw things off balance. The header this week is my ersatz printmaking setup; I finally bought a few more “proper” supplies (a brayer and a bench hook, among other things) and am experimenting with different papers; a friend’s interested in one of my prints (and has proposed an intriguing project, though I’m still not sure how seriously) and I’m trying to figure out the best way to make it work.
How’s your work going?
