Happy Monday, folks, and welcome to the Weekly Video Games Thread! I’m Wolfman Jew, and this… is not the worst example of video game captions I’ve ever seen.
I mean, it’s not far off, though. Just a few minutes after starting up Batman: Return to Arkham – Arkham Asylum, Rocksteady hits me with this. Joker’s line is literally so long that even with a second space, it goes past the actual borders of the game. And, of course, it’s ridiculously tiny and can’t be adjusted in any way, which is why I decided to just turn the damn things off on the whole. And, sure, it’s from 2009, we were all beasts back then, but this is technically a 2016 remaster. No excuses.
I’m not here to get into the intricacies of video game captioning. I’m not an expert on the field; I don’t have the resources on me. I was mostly interested in getting some examples from you on what are the worst captions or subtitles you’ve seen in a game? Feel free to note things like size, speed, font, an inability to provide alterations or options, or anything else.
And, while you’re here, what did you play this weekend?
