Today’s Gumball thread goes out to Season 3’s “The Question,” a high-concept installment that serves as one of the best examples of the show’s Calvin & Hobbes influence.
After tripping hard on sugary cereal, Gumball and Darwin come to the harrowing realization that they don’t know the meaning of their own lives. They go out to ask various supporting characters their perspectives on the subject, which are either horrifying in themselves, or are immediately thrown into question by ensuing misadventures.

One standout sequence, with jaunty musical accompaniment, has the boys learning from a series of progressively-larger predatory animals, each consuming the last, that the meaning of life is “to eat or be eaten.”
