Despite my best efforts, I wound up with a few more specific resolutions for 2026 than the general standing orders I’ve given myself the past few years (which have been largely if unspectacularly successful—a general reduction of my alcohol consumption, regular exercise, etc.). A few are creative-related (and, to be sure, some holdovers from previous years).
1. Exhibit. There are a few possibilities coming up both locally and regionally that I might fit.
2. Make at least a little money off this. I’ve resisted doing a Patreon, but I wonder if that might actually get me to get back to more regular production even if it doesn’t go anywhere.
3. Refurbish my website, which I don’t think I’ve updated in nearly two years. My statement’s almost all ready to go but I need to figure out the thumbnails and there’s… other stuff I’ll discuss in a few weeks (assuming any of it gets off the ground).
4. Experiment with zine production; I’ve had a growing realization the past couple of months that this might be the ideal exposure for my illustration work.
Making a slight change this year in my habits. Given the general success of those earlier resolutions, I decided not to preload everything as usual the week before New Year’s and slack off a bit like so many others (in part preparing for the standard Betwixtmas rush at work that never really materialized this time around). So often it seems like the burst of activity in January produces disappointing results (even if 2025 was different, I’m guessing it’s the exception that proves the rule) and I wonder if that’s because I expect too much. It’s been nice, but one unexpected result has been my addiction to Stardew Valley; I don’t think I’ve played a video game this much in thirteen years.
So the header this week is a photo from one of the little festivals they have (can’t remember the exact name, but it’s the one with the ice fishing; the sheer imagination it all involves blows my mind and I really need to read up on Eric Barone’s story). I do have a lot of irons in the fire, they’re just… sitting for a bit. And that’s okay.
How’s your work going?
