Off to the Old Country this morning for Christmas with the family, and will likely be unable to comment, but mulling over how this year’s gone and how I want the next one to go. Looking back at last year’s near-Christmas post, it feels like there’s been a weird equilibrium, in which a few things changed but the situation as a whole stayed the same artistically. On the one hand, I moved for the first time in over a decade and lost part of my left index finger, both events cutting into the free time I usually have for, say, bike rides through city and country as well as artistic production (though not nearly as much as I feared, it was definitely an issue). On the other, I stayed pretty consistent on production, slightly exceeding both graphic and painterly totals from 2024 (rendering my handwringing a year back over quota reduction or increase pretty foolish).
Quality-wise, it’s hard to tell. I think the highs were higher (or at least more concentrated) and there were fewer straight-up lows but middlin’ stuff fluctuated wildly. I’m used to regularly turning out work with the hope I’ll eventually produce something really good; taking more time with these is probably a good idea, but it’s definitely been an adjustment. The sudden irruption of printmaking back into my repertoire over the past couple of months has shaken things up a bit, too; remembering my last efforts in early 2020, I’m slightly annoyed with myself that I didn’t stick with it earlier (there’s not the usual “oh, maybe this led to a good thing” waffle either). That said, I’m glad it’s happened.
I’m not sure how tightening things up like this will work in the long run, though; I made a storage run this weekend and was able to get far more done than expected, consolidating a few boxes and even winnowing out a few paintings for the solstice after I’d earlier decided against it (already nearly hitting my goal for the vernal equinox, let alone the solstice) . On the one hand, that’s a good thing, but it’s getting harder to throw stuff out now that it’s getting better (for what it’s worth, there are only a couple of genuine regrets I have in this regard and I have digital pics of everything, so I can always take another swing in another medium or style if the composition’s still strong). I’m already trying to pivot towards a migratory mindset (even if that’s two or three years down the road) and streamlining my work and its storage is gonna be a big part of that.
So (as so often) cautiously optimistic; there are a few things in the works for 2026 that I’ll likely discuss with more time next week, but I’ll have more time, too, to think about them in the week ahead (maybe I’ll even draw or paint, who knows?). The header image is a doodle I knocked out in between sets at last week’s sketch session; if I get the chance, I’ll post a couple from the latter (the facilitator posed herself and my IG post got a lot of traction, ironically enough given my annoyance a couple of weeks back with this sort of thing).
How’s your work going?
