Alternately exhilarated and grumpy, creatively speaking. Instagram’s recent limit on hashtags (however much that really matters these days) feels like a codification of the increasing divide between people using it much like they’ve (all right, I’ve) always done and people who’ve been turning it into TikTok Jr. at the implicit behest of the service’s owners. I’m not gonna lie; I can’t fucking stand the pivot to video. It doesn’t help that my artwork isn’t… well, video, but neither are so many other of the reels that make it into my feed despite my almost religious avoidance of “stories.” I’m trying to stay relatively positive and will not get more specific with my dislikes given that they involve people I otherwise respect, but the idea of playing into this trend really grinds my gears, and I suspect my relatively dwindling audience numbers thereon have a lot to do with my current refusal to do so (a connection I’ve seen echoed by others experiencing the same phenomenon).
On the other hand, the possibilities that my recent foray into printmaking suggest have really energized my imagination and made me reconsider just a little how I approach painting and drawing. I’m very happy with my most recent production but it’s pretty sexually explicit and I just know I’m gonna screw up posting it with WordPress so will demur for now. I’m working on another (somewhat more presentable) block print and will likely stock up on supplies around the New Year as I’d like to get a lot done in January (it’d be nice if I could get another linocut done before the year’s out, too). Focusing on that as a positive for right now and starting to brainstorm other possibilities for showcasing my work if Instagram’s further enshittened (I’m starting to think the relative lack of this problem on Facebook, where I still get a fair number of eyeballs, is a deliberate generational sort on their part).
How’s your work going?
