The Box Office is Jump-Scared — Weekend Box Office Report for December 5th-December 7th, 2025

Sorry there was no box office report yesterday. Giftmas is a federal holiday, right?

Our number one movie is Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which takes the record for best opening weekend ever in the post-Thanksgiving frame. For those unaware, this can be a painful weekend for the box office, as people are becoming focused on things other than going to the movies. The previous “record holder” for this period was 2003’s The Last Samurai, which managed $24 million largely thanks to the presence of Tom Cruise. Freddy’s 2 absolutely obliterates that with a terrifying take of $64 million, which is nearly double where tracking had it in the days leading up to its release.

Mind you, long range tracking had Freddy’s 2 opening in the $50 million range, but those expectations went down significantly in the weeks that followed, with many assuming Zootopia 2 would be this weekend’s box office champ (which in a way it still is, but more on that in a bit). Put simply, the industry underestimated the power of the franchise with kids. “Walk up” business–as they call it these days–was fantastic, and who really gives a shit about those reviews? Like A Minecraft Movie earlier this year, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was made for fans, and that’s fine. This was filled with meta-humor which would sail over the heads of anyone not familiar with the fandom, including the casting of Megan Fox as Toy Chica (IYKYK). For Blumhouse, this is another much-needed victory lap for them after a series of disappointments this year. Just think, in an alternate reality where M3GAN 2.0 was a hit, we could be looking forward to the eventual Freddy vs. M3GAN crossover.

Arguably, however, the big story this weekend is Zootopia 2, and not just because of its decent hold at the US box office. The Disney sequel has already surpassed $900 million worldwide, and is going to be the biggest Hollywood movie of the year this time next week, surpassing Lilo & Stitch. Again, China’s government won’t allow Zootopia 2 to come anywhere near their precious Ne Zha 2, but for the time being, that’s where Judy and Nick are cleaning house. Bring on Zootopia 3 where the rabbit and fox finally get to fuck.

As for Wicked: For Good, while no one should be mourning for it, it simply isn’t showing the legs of Wicked: Part One. This was perhaps inevitable, but unless it has a really strong hold over Christmas, it won’t come anywhere close to that film’s $470 million domestic gross. Not that anyone should be complaining, as For Good is quickly approaching the $300 million mark.

There are also some other success stories this weekend. The popular anime series Jujutsu Kaisen came to the big screen with the “movie” Execution, which is really just a compilation of episodes. Still, the fans showed up in earnest to catch the Season 3 premiere early, so $10 million is a healthy haul. Meanwhile, Quintin Tarantino (no, I am NOT bringing that up) finally had his dream for Kill Bill come true by releasing it as one singular film as he originally intended before Disney (wisely) talked him into splitting it up. Given this has a runtime of well over four hours, most theaters could only have one or two showtimes a day, so $3 million isn’t bad. Hopefully a physical release of this edition of the movie will be coming down the road.

Anyway, the top ten, via The Numbers (note that this chart does not reflect weekend actuals)
