Happy Monday, folks, and welcome to the Weekly Video Games Thread!
Over the past month, I’ve been slowly working my way through World of Goo. It’s an excellent puzzler and a standout for early indie games. It also, like many games, has a Sound Test, essentially a mode where you can listen to the entire soundtrack. Even if you haven’t heard a song play in the game, it’s there, right in the main menu.
I’ve always loved Sound Tests, ever since I was a kid. I first encountered the idea in Banjo-Tooie, which has a jukebox in Jolly Roger’s Lagoon that can play any song you’ve heard (meaning that time-sensitive pieces like the sad Jinjo music are theoretically missable). Since then, I’ve always liked seeing one, whether that was in Donkey Kong Bananza or Hades or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Admittedly, the idea’s just a bit antiquated with streaming sites that carry the music separately, but there’s something really nice about it to me. So for today’s prompt, what’s your favorite sound test in a game?
And, as always, what did you play this weekend?
