There is nothing worse for the box office than Halloween falling on a Friday. Make no mistake, this is why Warner Bros. decided not to release Mortal Kombat II last week. It’s why High School Musical 3 had the best October opening ever back in 2008 only to crash and burn the following weekend. Halloween is where movies go to die.
Our number one film–at least for now–is Regretting You, but I’m going to add an enormous fucking asterisk there. You see, as things currently stand, Regretting You is barely just barely edging out Black Phone 2 with a take of $8.1 million vs. $8 million. Yes, it is that fucking close. The thing is, I’m kinda tempted to call bullshit on Paramount’s studio estimates for Regretting You, and I strongly suspect come tomorrow morning we’ll hear that the Ethan Hawke horror flick was ultimately the winner of the weekend. Well, if we can call any titles this week “winners.”
Not even the KPop Demon Hunters could come to the rescue, as Netflix for whatever reason decided to send the sing-along version of the kiddie favorite back to theaters for Halloween…without taking into account that kids don’t go to the movies on Halloween. The marketing encouraged audiences to show up in costume as their favorite characters, which is a fun idea. But again, kids don’t go to the movies on Halloween. Granted, to play demon’s advocate here, anything this made was basically free money for Netflix at this point, but if they aren’t going to release numbers, then neither am I.
The lone newcomer this weekend is the Oscar contender Bugonia, which may or may not count as a horror movie. It’s kind of hard to tell. I’ve heard some people say it’s a comedy. Obviously, this one looked weird, so really the ‘B’ CinemaScore it got should be considered an ‘A’ by such standards. Is Emma Stone an alien? Do I find baldness attractive? It doesn’t really matter, since this could only squeeze up $4.8 million, but all things considered, it could be doing a lot worse.
All in all, this was the worst weekend of 2025 so far. Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 really can’t get here soon enough, but hopefully Predator: Badlands will be able to prey on people’s wallets next week.
Anyway, the top ten, via The Numbers
